New 2018 Workshop: Wonky Stars
Half or Full Day
Every quilt has a story; this one is no exception. UK textile artist Helen Howes developed this pattern as a tribute to her star-loving brother, Simeon, who died in 2014. She has granted permission for me to teach from her pattern. If you enjoy star-themed quilts, improvisational piecing, and things a bit wonky, this one is for you!
Instant Improv for Quilters
full day (6 hours)
This workshop presents a laid-back approach to design, forcing quilters to work with what they have. Participants will make improvisational quilt blocks by combining a few of their own scraps with those supplied in class. We will let loose with wonky strips and off-kilter squares in this fun-filled journey down the improv road. This class works well for those who have always wanted to bring out their inner abstract artist. This workshop is best for those who will allow themselves to be open to asymmetrical, abstract, and generally ‘wonky’ designs.
The Fabric Detective
Half-day workshop (3 hours). This is an interactive, hands-on workshop for fabric enthusiasts who want to see vintage fabrics up-close. Bonnie brings samples from her own collection of antique fabrics, quilt blocks and quilts. Participants are urged to bring fabrics, blocks, tops, or quilts to be dated and discussed.
This fun nine-block wall hanging top can be completed in an afternoon. The slashing technique can be simple, as shown here, or made more complex by adding a third or fourth “stick” in each block. Or, you may decide to piece the “sticks” to add interest. The pictured quilt was made with all solid fabrics, but a different look will be achieved by using prints. It’s your choice!
It helps to bring your sense of play to this workshop. This is very much an exercise in letting go of one’s desire for precision piecing! It’s best to approach this workshop with an open, free-wheeling attitude! This workshop is meant to be FUN!
Can This Quilt Be Saved?

This is an interactive workshop for vintage quilt collectors and rescuers. Participants bring quilts / fragments for analysis, discussion, and guidance.
Finishing School - Half or Full Day options

This workshop includes demonstrations of techniques for multiple edge finishes; hands-on sewing of sample edge finishes; and (in the full day class) the option for each participant applying one bias or straight edge binding to their own finished quilt.
